Major powers must cooperate to fight terrorism: experts
The world's major powers should cooperate more to keep peace and stability and rely less on military force, a leading Communist Party of China (CPC) official told an international symposium Thursday in Beijing.
The world's major powers should cooperate more to keep peace and stability and rely less on military force, a leading Communist Party of China (CPC) official told an international symposium Thursday in Beijing.
The war in Iraq had a profound effect on global security, ZhangZhijun, vice-minister of the International Department of CPC Central Committee (IDCCCPC), told the "International Security Order after the Iraq War" symposium.
Traditional and non-traditional threats interlaced with unilateralism had altered the international situation, Zhang said.
China had put forward new security ideas, which centered on mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and cooperation, to meet the changing circumstances, Zhang said.
Countries should overcome differences in ideology and social systems, and discuss security policies and major activities to maintain international security, Zhang said.
Kuang Shengyan, vice-director of the China Center for Contemporary World Studies (CCCWS), said the Iraq war indicated that military power failed to guarantee international security.
Wang Chuanjing, a senior researcher of the China Society for International Strategic Studies (CSISS), said consensus by the international community on fighting terrorism had increased after the "9/11" terrorist attack.
Countries had enhanced cooperation in fighting terrorism, Wang said.
However, Wang said, unilateralist policies pursued by some countries had caused obvious divergence over major issues among the international anti-terrorism alliance.
Major countries had a responsibility to maintain international security through constructive cooperation, Kuang said.
Imbalances in the world were a key cause of security problems, he added.
The international community, especially the major countries, should consider the difficulties of medium-sized and small countries and adopt economic measures to relieve tense regional situations and improve the international security environment.
Wang said China was appealing for comprehensive measures in thefields of politics, economy, diplomacy and military actions, and for a greater role for the United Nations in fighting terrorism, so as to create just, reasonable and effective international cooperation.
About 70 experts on international issues from China, the UnitedStates, Germany and Russia participated in the symposium.
The symposium is co-sponsored by IDCCCPC, the Ebert Foundation and the Chinese Association for International Understanding.
