A senior Fatah movement representative said on Sunday that internal disputes between Fatah and the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) and the Islamic resistance movement Hamas were behind their postponement of the announcement of a ceasefire until Monday.
The movements' decision to declare a ceasefire agreement onMonday instead of Sunday came amid the Israeli army's arrangementsto pull out from a number of Palestinian territories reoccupiedsince the outbreak of the intifada (uprising) in September 2000.Palestinian and Israeli sources reported that PalestinianNational Authority (PNA) security officials convened on Sunday withIsraeli army officials to discuss ways and mechanisms of theexpected pullout.
The Fatah representative said "the movements have alreadyapproved the ceasefire, but they disagree over its final wording,"adding "disputes between Fatah and Hamas are mainly about theperiod of the truce."
"Disputes have also erupted inside the Fatah movement due to theAl-Aqsa Martyrs' brigades (the military wing of Fatah) refusal to aceasefire with Israel," he added.
The representative said "The movements would release a documenton Monday to announce their formal and final approval on the hudna(truce), even if Fatah fails to form a united internal stance onthe cease-fire."
Another Fatah representative Ahmad Ghoneim said "Fatah's centralcommittee insists on including a direct reference to the roadmappeace plan in the ceasefire document."
The ceasefire is a bilateral agreement between Israel and thePalestinians that ends all Palestinian-led attacks against Israelitargets in exchange for halting the Israeli army operations in thePalestinian territories for three months.
The document says "due to the political situation in the region,Fatah, the Islamic Jihad and Hamas declare a suspension of itsattacks for a period of three months on condition of ending allforms of the Israeli military assassination operations and raids,as well as releasing all the Palestinian political prisoners."
