Int'l Giants Drawn to N. China Port City

Tianjin, a coastal metropolis in north China, has to date attracted 87 of the world's top 500 multinationals to invest in 217 projects, worth a total of 6.41 billion US dollars.

Tianjin, a coastal metropolis in north China, has to date attracted 87 of the world's top 500 multinationals to invest in 217 projects, worth a total of 6.41 billion US dollars.

In addition, more than 20 multinational giants have opened offices in the city.

Tianjin's success in drawing investors is attributed to its efforts to create a sound environment for investment, according tosome local observers.

Most of the international firms came to Tianjin in the 1990s, mainly from the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Switzerland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Canada.

Japan is the largest investor in the city and has contributed to almost half of the multinational-invested projects.

The projects cover a wide range of industries including mining,manufacturing, power, gas, construction, communications, telecommunications, commerce, and service sectors.

The average foreign capital invested in the projects is 39.87 US dollars, 14 times as much as in other projects.

Mobile phone giant Motorola is the top foreign investor in the city, with a total investment of more than three billion US dollars.
