South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and US President George W. Bush on Tuesday urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to scrap its alleged nuclear weapons program.

According to a press release issued by the South Korean presidential office, the two leaders made the appeal during a telephone conversation when Bush called Roh at 8:30 p.m. (1100 GMT)over the DPRK nuclear issue.

They agreed on urging Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons program, and vowed to map out a strategy concerning the solution of the nuclear crisis during their forthcoming summit, the press release said.

Roh will pay his first seven-day official visit to the United States in mid-May at Bush's invitation.

During the conversation, the two leaders agreed that the just ended trilateral Beijing talks on the nuclear issue are beneficial. South Korea and the United States are scrutinizing the proposal raised by the DPRK concerning the settlement of the nuclear dispute.

Seoul and Washington should cooperate closely on the nuclear issue and make endeavor to solve the nuclear row peacefully, the release quoted the two leaders as saying.

The United States, the DPRK and China held tripartite talks in Beijing last week, which were the first official contact between Washington and Pyongyang since the nuclear issue erupted late last year.

The DPRK delegation to the talks put forth "a new bold proposal" to clear up mutual concerns of the DPRK and the United States, according to a statement of the DPRK last Friday. Details of the proposal, however, have not been disclosed so far.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell confirmed that during the three-day closed-door talks, the DPRK "did put forward a plan that would ultimately deal with their nuclear capability and their missile activities."
