Japanese PM Sees Need for New U.N. Resolution for War on Iraq
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Thursday cited the need for a fresh U.N. Security Council resolution if the United States is to launch an attack on Iraq.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Thursday cited the need for a fresh U.N. Security Council resolution if the United States is to launch an attack on Iraq.
"It is desirable to have an additional new U.N. Security Council resolution," Koizumi was quoted by Kyodo News as saying tothe country's House of Representatives Budget Committee.
Earlier in the day, Koizumi said U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's presentation at the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday was persuasive and suggested time is limited before a possible U.S.attack on Iraq.
Powell's disclosure of what he claimed to be evidence that Iraqhas been deceiving U.N. arms inspectors intensified the suspicionsthat it has weapons of mass destruction, Koizumi said.
According to Kyodo, Japan has not officially made clear whetherit will support the anticipated U.S. invasion of Iraq.
Hans Blix, the chief U.N. weapons inspector, and Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, are to visit Iraq from Saturday.
"Watching future developments closely, Japan will have to act as a responsible member of the international community and a U.S. ally," Koizumi said.
Iraq holds the key to whether the issue can be resolved peacefully, Koizumi said, repeating his call on Iraq to implement U.N. Security Council Resolution 1441 in a faithful manner.
