Japan, Britain Agree to Continue Efforts Over Iraq
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have agreed to continue efforts to urge Iraq to erase concerns about its alleged possession of mass destruction weapons in line with UN resolutions.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have agreed to continue efforts to urge Iraq to erase concerns about its alleged possession of mass destruction weapons in line with UN resolutions.
"I also told Prime Minster Blair that we need to make efforts so that US President George W. Bush will deal with Iraq in cooperation with the international community," Koizumi was quoted by Kyodo News after talking with Blair on the telephone in late evening Wednesday.
"And Prime Minister Blair agreed with me," he said.
The Japanese premier said he told Blair of the need to closely follow discussions in the UN Security Council "so that we can makedecisions without errors" on how to deal with Iraq.
According to Kyodo, Koizumi declined to say clearly whether he and the British premier discussed a possible US-led attack on Iraq."I'm not supposed to talk about it in public," he said.
Japan has yet to show whether it will support the United Statesif it is to attack Iraq before the United Nations adopts a new resolution, Kyodo said.
The two leaders' conversation came shortly before US Secretary of State Colin Powell presents to the security council new information about Iraq's alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction, Kyodo added.
