German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has again rejected any German involvement in a possible U.S.-led war on Iraq and vowed to adhere to his position.
In an interview with regional newspapers published on Saturday,Schroeder dismissed claims that Germany's stance showed a lack of solidarity with the United States.
Germany pledged to support a friend under attack but this did not mean to remain silent when priorities were wrong, he said, adding "that is the case with Iraq".
Speaking on ARD TV on Friday evening, Schroeder also stressed there would be no change in his government's position to keep German troops away from any military strike against Iraq.
Berlin will not budge from that stance and NATO partners are aware of that, he said.
Schroeder noted that Germany had deployed more troops abroad than any other country apart from the United States, and thereforereached its limits in overseas military operations.
Earlier this week, Schroeder repeatedly said that Germany wouldneither provide troops nor money for any US-led war against Iraq. His position is supported by more than 80 percent of the German public, according to opinion polls.
