German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Monday that
Germany
would not support a possible US-led war on
Iraq
.
He made the statement in a speech marking the start of the final phase of his reelection campaign.
Schroeder told cheering supporters in his hometown of Hanover that his government firmly backed putting pressure on Iraqi leaderSaddam Hussein to bring about the return of international arms inspectors.
"But I can only warn against playing around with war and military intervention -- we won't get involved in this," said Schroeder to a laud applause.
Schroeder also stressed Berlin would neither dispatch troops toIraq nor fund US war operations.
Germany has showed solidarity with the US after September 11 but is unwilling to get involved in "risky adventures", Schroeder said.
Germany will set its own policy on Iraq, said Schroeder, adding:"Germany is a self-confident nation."
