23 Afghans, Americans Killed, Wounded in Battle Against Al-Qaeda Members

At least 23 Afghans and Americans have been killed and wounded in a counter offensive by the alleged Al-Qaeda members holed up in Arma mountainous area in eastern Afghan province of Paktia, according to the Islamabad- based News Network International (NNI) on Sunday.

At least 23 Afghans and Americans have been killed and wounded in a counter offensive by the alleged Al-Qaeda members holed up in Arma mountainous area in eastern Afghan province of Paktia, according to the Islamabad- based News Network International (NNI) on Sunday.

It said one American advisor and five Afghan warriors were killed and 17 others including four American advisors injured when they came under heavy mortars attack from the Al-Qaeda fighters.

Quoting frontline commander Wazir Khan Zadran the NNI said that Al-Qaeda fighters have been putting stiff resistance forcing fighters of Khost and Paktia to retreat on two fronts.

Wazir Khan Zadran, who is commanding 600 forces, said that heavy bombing has been continuing since early Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, Safiullah, the son of Haji Saifullah, chief of Gardez Tribal Shura was quoted as saying that the Afghan forces along with American troops have besieged the Arma mountainous area. He said check posts have been established at different areas to block the escape routes of Al-Qaeda members.

He said that the Afghan and Arab members of Al-Qaeda had assembled at Arma after the U.S. conducted heavy operation in Tora Bora. He claimed that most of these people have arrived from Tora Bora and Kandahar.
