Iran Denies U.S. Accusation of Sheltering al-Qaeda Members
Iranian Minister of Information Ali Yunesi on Thursday termed as "sheer speculation" Washington's claims that some of the terror suspect al-Qaeda members had been given refuge in Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Iranian Minister of Information Ali Yunesi on Thursday termed as "sheer speculation" Washington's claims that some of the terror suspect al-Qaeda members had been given refuge in Iran, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"So far, not a single member of the al-Qaeda network has been identified in Iran and America's claims in this regard are sheer lies," he was cited by IRNA as saying.
He also rejected U.S. accusation of Iran's interference in Afghanistan, adding the U.S. "had better ask Afghan Interim Leader Hamid Karzai what interference we have made in his country."
Yunesi's remarks came as U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said on Sunday that there "isn't any doubt" that Tehran helped al-Qaeda and Taliban members escape into Iran from neighboring Afghanistan.
Earlier, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi denied U.S. accusation of Iran providing shelter to al-Qaeda group, saying Iran has full control over its long joint borders with Afghanistan.
