Two men who were the principal offenders in two cases of embezzlement involving a total of 500 million yuan (60 million U.S. dollars) were sentenced to death Friday by the Second Intermediate People's Court of Beijing, China's capital city.
The two men, Lu Feng and Cheng Jing, also had their property confiscated and were stripped of their political rights for life.
The other 11 defendants were given the death penalty with reprieve, life imprisonment or jail terms ranging from two to 14 years.
Between 1997 and 1999, Lu and Cheng persuaded 18 enterprises to deposit 163 million yuan (19.6 million U.S. dollars) into a bank designated by the defendants, by promising illegal higher than average interest rates.
The two offenders, in collusion with bank clerks, channeled 150 million yuan from the bank by forging checks and using official seals without authorization, according to the court.
All 13 defendants, in separated cases, also embezzled large sums of money from banks by various illegal means, the court said.
