Former Shenzhen Vice-Mayor Arrested for Corruption

Wang Ju, a former vice-mayor of this prosperous special economic zone in south China, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China, and will face judicial judgment for abuse of power and taking bribes, according to an official press conference held Wednesday in Shenzhen.

Qiu Defeng, 29, of Yutang Village, Chengmai County, set the house of his uncle Qiu Junxian, 68, on fire after murdering him.

Qiu told the police that he had planned to commit suicide, so that, together with his uncle, he could attain Nirvana, the sole aim of practicing Falungong.

Wang Ju, a former vice-mayor of this prosperous special economic zone in south China, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China, and will face judicial judgment for abuse of power and taking bribes, according to an official press conference held Wednesday in Shenzhen.

Also former vice-chairman of the standing committee of the People's Congress of Shenzhen, Wang Ju took more than 1.4 million yuan (about 170,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes since 1993.

Wang, once in charge of local land programming and urban construction, abused his power to illegally reduce land payments by a total of 120 million yuan for his daughter and son-in-law, who were involved in real estate development.

Wang also took advantage of his position to reduce the required land payments for several real estate companies introduced to him by his daughter and son-in-law, who later received 15.5 million yuan and 11.8 million HK dollars as commission, and solicited a large sum of money from the people concerned under the pretext of "borrowing money."

Other corrupt officials involved in Wang's case have also been arrested, and some have been kicked out of the party and removed from their posts, investigators said.
