URUMQI, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is now enjoying the best period of prosperity and development in its history, a regional government official said Wednesday. According to Erkin Tuniyaz, vice-chairman of the regional government, some people in the world with ulterior motives have ignored the fact that the people of Xinjiang are living a better life, and have instead deliberately spread rumors about the so-called "forced labor", "forced sterilization" and "genocide".

In recent years, Hotan prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, once plagued by desertification, has effectively improved its ecological environment and has created huge economic benefits for local residents. Villagers in Cele county, Hotan, have planted 8,000 mu (533 hectares) of red willows and haloxylon ammodendron, in order to anchor the sands.
