The Tiger Leaping Gorge:
From the top of the gorge you look down the steeply angled (70-90 degrees) mountain sides to the rushing Golden Sands (Jingsha) River with its 18 frothing rapids more than 200 meters (about 700 feet) below.
The 17-km-long gorge is divided into three segments with an aggregate fall of 210 meters: the upper, middle and lower tiger jumps. The first section, which is the narrowest and uppermost section, is the mouth of the fast flowing Jingsha River. In the middle of the river's mouth is a large rock that is positioned at the gorge's narrowest section, only 30 meters (99 feet) wide. An ancient legend says that a tiger used this rock as its stepping stone so it could leap across from one side of the gorge to the other, which is how the gorge got its name.
As the river enters the middle section, it drops another 100 meters (330 feet) and rushes through with incredible speed. Here the thunderous waters slam into sharp, large rocks and crash down into the river forming swirling whirlpools.
A mountain trail - referred to as the "high path" in contrast with the paved road once known as the "low path" that passes through the gorge - enables visitors to hike the gorge between the towns of Qiaotou and Daju over a total distance of roughly 40 kilometers.
Two touring routes are available for tourists: one of them is to visit it in a vehicle, it's convenient and relaxing; the other is to hike through via either the Haba Snow Mountain road or the gravel road. In this way you feel closer to the Tiger Leaping Gorge. The view of Tiger Leaping Gorge consists of its gorge view and its mountain view, all the scenery mentioned above is gorge view. Tourists can enjoy the gorge view on the gravel road. Mountain view is the view seen from hiking through the Haba Snow Mountain, it can be appreciated on the way from Haba Snow Mountain to Zhongdian Baishuitai.
