It is the largest waterfall on the Yellow River, with its torrential flows dashing down with deafening noises and throwing up misty water, which is renowned as “the wonder of yellow waterfall.” It is also the second largest waterfall in China after the Huanguoshu Falls.
Dragon Gate on the Yellow River
It is located at opening of the Gorge of the Yellow River, 30 kilometers north of Hancheng City. With two mountains facing each other on both sides, and the Yellow River flowing between, the width of the river is less than 40 meters. Once out of the Dragon Gate, the torrent rolls thunderously on for a thousand li. It is said that Yu the Great had been handling the water here, hence the name “Gate Yu”. The allusion of “Chinese carp leaping over Dragon Gate” refers to here too.
