Wang Tian: Mr. Yao, what is your opinion on enhancing communication and mutual trust between China and the U.S.?
Yao Zuhui: Since America's congress exerts significant influence on its foreign policy, I suggest we strengthen exchanges with their parliamentarians - especially with young representatives of the state legislatures - to enhance their understanding of the prevailing conditions in China and the country's policies.
Wang Tian: Mr. Baucus, the new American Ambassador to China is going to take office soon. Do you think he will bring something new to China-U.S. ties?
Cui Tiankai: During the course of my five-day visit to Montana last year I never imagined that Baucus's trajectory would bring him to Beijing. Baucus is a senior senator in the U.S. and has a good deal of experience in China-U.S. economic ties. I think he is looking forward to making a difference in Beijing.
China and the U.S. should both firmly safeguard the post-war order.
Wang Tian: How do you view America's "rebalancing" strategy in Asian-Pacific region?
Cui Tiankai: Many Chinese and U.S. interests overlap; they are not mutually exclusive. We hope that the Asia-Pacific region can be the starting point for the two sides to build a new-model relationship between great powers. This goal has already generated a positive response from the U.S. President. Xi Jinping has said that the Pacific Ocean is broad enough to accommodate two great powers. Common development will be achieved if both countries' perspectives and visions are as broad as the Pacific Ocean.
Wang Tian: Is it possible for the two countries to cooperate effectively on the protection of the victory of World War Ⅱ and the post-war international order?
Cui Tiankai: Every nation should have a distinct position on major issues of principle; this is the basis of normal political international relations. Every responsible country should safeguard such principles whenever some party attempts to overturn the current international order and deny history. Both China and the U.S. should shoulder this responsibility.
