On the other hand, Alexandre-Louis Cailler, grandson of F-L Cailler, opened a new plant in Broc in 1898, and he developed a completely new process for manufacturing to come up with a milkier and creamier milk chocolate. The use of condensed milk and the manufacturing process invented by Alexandre-Louis Cailler is still in use today.

Now part of the Nestle group, the milk for CAILLER chocolate comes from cows in the Fribourg region and cocoa from the Nestle Cocoa Plan in the Ivory Coast.

The chocolate tour ends at a tasting room showing every kind of Maison Cailler made chocolate. I taste a variety of the chocolate samples -- Daniel Peter’s milk chocolate, pralines, Charles-Amédée Kohler’s milk and nut chocolate and branches. What a sweet ending and wonderful fulfilment to my chocoholic senses.

A visit to the mystical past of the Castle of Gruyères and surreal future presented by the HR Giger Museum is somewhat a perfect combination.

The Castle of Gruyères dates back to the 11th century was the residence of nineteen counts of Gruyères. Having gone through numerous change of ownership between mid 16th century and early 20th century, the castle was bought back by the canton of Fribourg in 1938 and made into a museum.

HR Giger Museum houses exhibitions of H.R. Giger’s world of surreal and macabre creations. H.R. Giger was born in Chur, Switzerland and probably most-known to the world as the designer for film director Ridley Scott’s creature in the “Alien” movie which garnered Giger an Academy Award.

We stay in four-star NH Hotel and two family-run hotels in Fribourg and have some new and interesting experience.

The family-run Hotel du Cheval Blanc close early and serve no dinner on Saturday. We have lots of fun being the only guests in the hotel for Saturday night until staff member comes Sunday morning to serve us breakfast.

If you have a Swiss Pass, make the best of it travelling around Switzerland as much as you can but not to skip Fribourg. It is one of the most beautiful destinations along the Swiss rail tracks and like no other regions in Switzerland.
