Family affair among riders

Wang Jiayi didn't consider taking up equestrian until he saw the joy his son experienced riding a mixed-breed Yili, a type of small horse from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

"I saw some friends riding horses in March and thought it looked very elegant, which made me want my son to learn equestrian. I also wanted to make him braver, like a real man," he said.

"On one of the days I accompanied my son at the club, an instructor encouraged me to have a try riding a horse for myself."

Wang said being in the saddle made him experience an "excitement never felt before," while also improving his flexibility and balance.

Wang also credits his 8-year-old son's involvement in equestrian with improving his ability at fencing, his other sporting passion.

"Fencing is similar to equestrian because you have to react to the different movements and rhythms. You have to sit up and down as the feet of the horse moves," Wang said.
