Located outside Guang'anmen in Xicheng District, Beijing, Tianning Temple Pagoda is one of the earliest tall buildings in this ancient capital. According to researches by eminent Chinese architect Liang Sicheng, the pagoda was built in the ninth year of Emperor Dakang's reign in Liao Dynasty (AD 1083). The pagoda is 57.8 meters high. Octagonal in shape, the solid brick pagoda has 13 stories with multi-layered eaves.
Tianning Temple Pagoda underwent several renovations during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is one of the most famous existing ancient pagodas in Beijing. In 1988, Tianning Temple Pagoda was renovated and was declared as a national key cultural relics protection unit.
