These life-changing experiences are all thanks to TV talent shows, which have exploded in popularity. Now, anyone with the talent has a chance to be in the spotlight.
"American Idol" began airing in June 2002. The offshoot of Britain’s "Pop Idol", it has since become one of the most successful shows in the history of American television. It is recognized for launching the career of many artists, including Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Adam Lambert, while remaining a TV ratings juggernaut.
A huge rival to the Idol franchise is "The Voice", based on the reality singing competition "The Voice of Holland". Many other countries have also jumped on the bandwagon, airing their own versions of "The Voice" since 2011.
Another top player is "The X Factor" franchise created by Simon Cowell, which originated in the UK. The "X Factor" of the title refers to the undefinable "something" that makes star quality, found in acts like Leona Lewis and One Direction.
