Pakistan summons India's top envoy after naval ship collision

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Wednesday lodged a strong protest with India over what it described as a "highly provocative and unacceptable" action by an Indian Navy vessel in Pakistan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it summoned the charge d'affaires of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and conveyed Pakistan's protest over the incident, which occurred on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, the incident took place while the Pakistan Navy was conducting its biennial exercise, adding that the Indian vessel came dangerously close to the Pakistani naval ship, resulting in contact between the two vessels.

Pakistan's foreign ministry said this act constituted a serious violation of the provisions of relevant agreements signed by the two sides and risked exacerbating regional tensions.

Pakistan urged New Delhi to strictly adhere to international law and bilateral agreements, particularly those intended to prevent incidents at sea, according to the ministry.
