Sitting at an average elevation of about 4,900 meters in northern Jiali county, Nagqu city, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, the Mitika wetland offers breathtaking views of the plateau wetland ecosystem.
As the source of the Miti Tsangpo River, a tributary of the Lhasa River, the wetland serves as an important ecological barrier for northern Xizang and plays a vital role in maintaining regional ecological stability and supporting the plateau ecosystem.
With well-preserved natural conditions, the highland wetland features crisscrossing streams, vast meadows, scattered lakes, and expansive, pristine landscapes. It retains the original beauty of a high-altitude wetland and reflects the vitality of the ecosystem on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau.
In 2004, the Mitika wetland was designated as one of the Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Over the years, local authorities have continued efforts to protect and restore the wetland, strengthening the ecological security barrier of the plateau while enhancing its functions in water conservation, biodiversity protection, and climate regulation.
