China's absolute poverty eradication highlights governance strategy, says Malaysian scholar

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's effective governance has overseen one of the greatest successes in poverty reduction, achieved through actively identifying problems and seeking practical solutions, according to a Malaysian scholar.

China's policies have enabled people to enjoy a higher quality of life and develop more capabilities by prioritizing areas such as education, vocational training, healthcare and elderly care, Associate Professor Roy Anthony Rogers of Universiti Malaya told Xinhua in a recent interview.

China's poverty-reduction progress has been achieved primarily through targeted investments in infrastructure, digital connectivity, financial aid, educational support, industrial development, and the resettlement of residents from substandard living conditions, according to him.

It is noteworthy to mention that by identifying impoverished counties, China launched a targeted campaign that successfully eliminated absolute poverty, he said.

Roy added that China's successful poverty reduction efforts have provided an effective development model for the international community and are consistent with the aspirations of the United Nations (UN), as China observes its National Poverty Relief Day on Oct. 17, the same date as the UN's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. "This shared date reflects China's alignment with the global anti-poverty agenda."

"Poverty is a tragedy for humanity, and China's experience in eradicating poverty is not merely a contribution to its own development; its strategies can also serve as a valuable reference for other countries," he added.
