NAIROBI, July 9 (Xinhua) -- China's electric vehicle manufacturer TAILG Technology Group and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish Africa's first Green Mobility Center of Excellence, marking a significant step toward strengthening Kenya's green industrial capacity.

Jean-Luc Stalon, UNDP resident representative in Kenya, said the agreement will see TAILG invest 500,000 U.S. dollars in an electric vehicle assembly research laboratory, while also launching an engineering training of trainers program and a manufacturing academy.

"The partnership reflects growing confidence in Kenya's potential to become a leading destination for green industrialization in Africa," Stalon said in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

Stalon noted that the partnership will also support the development of open battery-swapping standards in Kenya and pilot a carbon finance mechanism for electric vehicle fleets.

He observed that the Chinese firm's investment will help strengthen Kenya's technical talent in green manufacturing while addressing the challenge of youth unemployment.

Yao Li, executive president of TAILG, said the company views Kenya as a strategic partner in advancing sustainable industrial development across Africa.

Yao added that the signing of the agreement reflects TAILG's long-term commitment to supporting Africa's green transition through technology transfer, local manufacturing, and skills development.

He added that the company aims to help build a comprehensive green mobility ecosystem that empowers local entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators while contributing to sustainable economic growth.
