Sri Lankan police seize over 2,400 firearms linked to shootings in 2025
COLOMBO, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Police seized 2,404 firearms linked to shooting incidents in 2025 as part of intensified operations against organized crime, a police spokesman told media on Friday.
Police Media spokesman Assistant Superintendent F.U. Wootler said that the authorities also arrested 44 suspected shooters during the year. In addition, police detained 34 motorcyclists accused of transporting gunmen to crime scenes and 307 suspects believed to have aided and abetted the attacks.
The seizures and arrests followed a series of coordinated investigations and raids aimed at curbing gun violence and dismantling criminal networks operating across the country, he said, adding that further operations are underway to trace illegal firearms and prevent future shootings.
