A suspected serial killer charged with multiple counts of homicide, rape, robbery and mutilating corpses stood trial in Baiyin, northwest China’s Gansu Province, on Tuesday.

A hearing of Gao Chengyong's case was held at the Baiyin Intermediate People's Court. It was not open to the public because of privacy considerations, said the court.

The trial is expected to last for around two days. Family members of the victims were present in court on day one.

Gao is accused of killing 11 people in Gansu Province and the neighboring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region between 1988 and 2002, according to the Ministry of Public Security. The youngest victim was an eight-year-old girl. The 52-year-old was arrested in August 2016.
