Chen Jing and other volunteers

Chen Jing, 56, came to Rio de Janeiro just to participate in the opening ceremony for the 2016 Olympic Games. She will also be an official volunteer for the Games, and the oldest Chinese volunteer at that.

Chen has loved dancing and sports all her life, but she never had the chance to become a professional dancer or athlete. Instead, after her retirement, she began to teach Latin dance in the city of Wuxi. Samba is Chen's favorite dance, and she desperately wished to visit the country where Samba was born.

Chen's daughter works in Brazil. Knowing of her mother's dream, she suggested that Chen apply to join the Samba performance and volunteer for the Rio Games. This year, Chen did just that. She participated in the Samba carnival and the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games. After the first dress rehearsal on July 31, Chen was so excited that she had trouble falling asleep.

Since Chen has to wait backstage for her cue, she has not watched the whole performance start to finish. Nonetheless, she can hear the sequence via earphone mic. Imagining the panorama, complete with choreography and music, she still feels touched.

During the Rio Games, Chen will also be a volunteer, assisting the table tennis athletes. While she is in Rio, Chen plans to seek out fellow Chinese fans and play table tennis with them in nearby clubs.
