Media to play constructive role in Belt and Road communication

Global media organizations demonstrate strong willingness to report on China's Belt and Road Initiative, according to attendees at a media forum hosted by People's Daily on July 26.

In interviews with People's Daily Online, both Reuters and Bloomberg expressed their ambitions to cover this initiative, which will affect the global economy.

Reuters plans to establish a specific section for Belt and Road Initiative, as its readers are both interested in and eager to better understand the initiative, as well as what opportunities it will produce, according to Johnathn Leff, Global Head of Financial News Strategy at Reuters in an exclusive interview with People's Daily Online.

David Merritt, Executive Editor for Asia Pacific at Bloomberg News, said they will continue to cover each big event that is part of the initiative. He said that his organization is most interested in how the initiative will be funded and how it will impact the companies that have invested in the program.

Discussing the Silk Road Fund, Merritt said the public did not currently have a sufficient understanding of how the fund operates. Bloomberg plans to follow the fund in the future, according to Merritt, who believed that Bloomberg plays an important role in keeping international investors informed about the Belt and Road Initiative.

In a congratulatory message to the forum, President Xi Jinping said that media plays an essential role in communicating information, enhancing mutual trust and building consensus. Echoing Xi's opinion, Ahmed Elsayed, Chairman of Al-Ahram, an Egyptian daily paper, said that media should stick to the principles of objectiveness and balance to spread truth, to focus on the commonalities of human beings, and to avoid crisis. "Only by doing this can the press improve its credibility," said Elsayed in his keynote speech at the forum.
