By Michael Kurtagh (People's Daily Online) 15:16, November 04, 2026

You sit down at a Chinese dinner and find a small pitcher and a tiny cup at your place, and no one tells you what they're for. Don't worry, you're not the only one who has wondered. The little pitcher is called a fenjiuqi, and the little cup a jiuzhong, and they're the key to how baijiu, a strong distilled Chinese alcohol that translates to "white liquor" in English, is shared at the table. In this episode, we'll show you how they work.
