New days on the roof of the world

(People's Daily Online) 15:59, October 19, 2026

Only those who have endured the harsh winter know the warmth of spring.

Seventy-five years ago, Xizang's peaceful liberation opened a new chapter in the history of the plateau. Democratic reform burst across the land like a thunderclap, and the centuries-old feudal serfdom system collapsed. About 1 million serfs who "had nothing but their own shadows" gained a new lease on life, stood upright for the first time, and embraced a spring of their own.

Under the guidance of the Communist Party of China's strategy for governing Xizang in the new era, the snowy plateau has achieved leapfrog development, and the emancipated serfs lead the happy lives their ancestors could only dream of.

People's livelihood is paramount, and the government cares for every detail of people's well-being. From education, culture and employment to healthcare and elderly care, President Xi Jinping's concern for people's wellbeing has taken root here, warming countless households like spring.

Recently, reporters traveled deep into the vast plateau to meet the polas and molas (Tibetan honorific terms for grandfathers and grandmothers) who personally experienced the feudal serfdom system of old Xizang, to hear how the Party has brought a true spring to the snowy plateau.
