Redeveloped Huanggang Port logs over 130,000 passenger trips on 1st weekend since opening
HONG KONG, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- More than 130,000 cross-border passenger trips were recorded at the redeveloped Huanggang Port on Saturday, the first weekend following its opening, according to the Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.
The figure marked a significant increase in passenger traffic compared to the old control point.
Chris Tang Ping-keung, secretary for security of the HKSAR government, said on Saturday that in the first few working days after the redeveloped Huanggang Port came into operation, the daily volume of cross-boundary travelers rose from 30,000 to 40,000 previously to over 80,000, while overall customs clearance remained smooth.
The redeveloped port is positioned as a key passenger land border control point between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. It operates under a co-location arrangement with a new "collaborative inspection and joint clearance" mode, allowing travelers to complete both Hong Kong and Shenzhen immigration clearance in a single queue.
The original Huanggang Port, which opened in 1989, was China's first large-scale land port with 24-hour clearance. Reconstruction on the original site began in 2019 to meet the surging demand for cross-border passage.
