White House asks U.S. ambassador to Greece to resign amid misconduct probe
WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Trump administration has asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign amid allegations of misconduct, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said Tuesday.
"We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," Zacharia said at her first White House press briefing. "She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well."
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Guilfoyle had asked a Trump donor to pay a 100,000 U.S.-dollar American Express bill days before her confirmation hearing. The newspaper also reported that she had taken luxury trips funded by wealthy Greek businessmen.
The State Department's inspector general is investigating her and the U.S. Embassy in Greece, NBC News reported, citing two people familiar with the matter.
