Rainforest experience event opens in Baoting, S China's Hainan

The opening ceremony of a rainforest experience event was held on Sept. 10 at a park in Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County, the event's main venue, in south China's Hainan Province.

As a signature ecological and cultural brand developed by Hainan, the event draws on the province's pristine landscapes and rainforest ecosystem to create an immersive experience that showcases the conservation, coexistence and development of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.

The event is hosted by the Hainan Provincial Forestry Bureau and the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Administration, and organized by the People's Government of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County and the scientific research and monitoring center of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.

Since its launch in 2022, it has grown into a major event that combines showcases of ecological achievements with science education, immersive experiences, and cultural, agricultural and tourism activities. It has also become an important platform for sharing China's stories of national park development and biodiversity conservation with the world.

The opening performance was staged on an open-air circular stage built around the natural terrain of the park. The original vegetation and waterways were preserved, while recyclable stage materials, low-noise sound systems and low-color-temperature lighting were used to minimize the environmental impact.

The rainforest experience event runs from June through December, with activities held at the main venue and multiple sub-venues. It features live performances, science education and volunteer services, immersive experiences, and international outreach and media activities.

Activities are held across the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, including a rainforest challenge, rainforest hiking, an international cycling event, a mountaineering event, a harvest celebration, a green orange tourism festival and a forest-themed gathering.

Since June, nature education programs have been held regularly at 15 primary and secondary schools across Hainan. Since July, journalists from more than 30 mainstream media outlets and social media influencers have participated in rainforest-themed field trips. A three-month bilingual slow livestream has also been launched to showcase the rainforest and help local communities share in the benefits of ecological conservation.

As part of the event, an international symposium on tropical rainforest national parks was held in Baoting from Sept. 10 to 13.
