More typhoons to make landfall in China in August

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- China is expected to see 2 to 3 typhoons making landfall or bringing notable impacts in August, according to the latest climate forecast made by meteorological authorities on Tuesday.

The number is roughly in line with the historical average of 2.3 for the month, but the overall intensity of typhoons is expected to be stronger than usual, Jia Xiaolong, deputy head of the National Climate Center, told a press conference.

Jia also forecast higher-than-average temperatures across most of the country in August, with four pronounced heatwaves on the horizon.

In terms of precipitation, regions including northeast China, north China, east China, central China, south China, southwest China, Xizang and Xinjiang are expected to receive more rainfall than in normal years. Six notable rain events are forecast for the month, Jia added.

Jia cautioned that against the backdrop of a strong to super strong El Niño event, China is likely to experience above-average rainfall, high temperatures and typhoons in August.
