The National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) held a press conference in Beijing on May 5, announcing that the main event of this year’s International Museum Day will be held at the Hunan Museum on May 18. This year’s theme is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”.
Initiated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Museum Day aims to promote the development of museums worldwide and attract the public to understand, participate in, and pay attention to the museum cause. The day is May 18 every year, and a theme is determined every year.
The 2019 International Museum Day main event is co-hosted by the NCHA and the Hunan Provincial People's Government; and undertaken by the Chinese Museum Association, the Hunan Culture and Tourism Department, the Hunan Bureau of Cultural Heritage, and Changsha Municipal People's Government.
The Hunan Museum, along with other museums in the country, will co-organize a special exhibition displaying the development history of the Chinese civilization. The museum will also hold three exhibitions featuring Hunan Guqin (Chinese zither) culture, porcelain paintings, and Qi Baishi’s paintings.
