Chinese President Xi Jinping said he is in Germany to usher a new chapter of ties between the two countries, entering a new phase of fast development the two countries have been building.

"From the perspective of politics, economy and people-to-people exchanges, it has been a successful story considering the 45 years of development between the two countries," Xi said.

"Now our relationship stands at a new starting point," said Xi. "This time as I visit Germany, I am drawing a new blueprint, defining a new goal, and planning a new path in next phase of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries."

Xi is in Germany for his second state visit and to attend the G20 summit in Hamburg.

Various agreements between China and Germany were signed, and Xi said this bilateral relationship is a good example in leading the China-Europe relationship.

Productive discussion between Xi and Merkel

Xi said he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel had a very productive discussion prior to agreements signing session.

During their talks, Xi said important consensuses were reached in strengthening political trust, enlarging people-to-people exchanges, enriching cooperation under strategic values, and furthering close multilateral cooperation.

Security and counter-terrorism are areas China and Germany are looking to cooperate in, on top of aerospace and intelligent manufacturing, according to Xi.

Issues surrounding the DPRK and Syria were also discussed. 

On her side, Merkel said Germany supports China's Belt and Road Initiative, and is very glad to participate.

She said the two countries are not just trading products, but are now transferring technology.

"We had close cooperation in this regard and it will continue to be on top of the agenda," said Merkel.

Both countries are also cooperating to develop their respective manufacturing industries under national strategies, namely China's "Made in China 2025" and Germany's "Industry 4.0."

Merkel also expressed gratitude to China for its support, as the European country hosts the upcoming G20 Hamburg summit, which Xi will be attending.

The G20 Summit on July 7 and 8 is expected to focus on global economic growth, trade, the spread of digital technology, climate policy and Africa's development.

Earlier on Wednesday, German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier hosted a welcome ceremony with military honors for Xi at the presidential residence in Berlin.
