(People's Daily Online)    02:56, October 04, 2016

Some 500 tourists are reportedly stuck on top of Mount Hua in central China late Monday night, after the cable car service was down for heavy wind.

Photos posted on Sina Weibo show tourists, most of whom are elderly, women and children, gathered in a cave near the cable car station on the West Peak of Mount Hua.

The scenic spot management office said on its Sina Weibo that rain coats, warm ginger soup, water and food were distributed to the tourists. In the post, the office also said “We are not sure when, but as soon as the wind dies down a bit we will send tourists back to the ground.”

The West Peak, where the accident occurred, has an altitude of 2,086.6 meters (about 6,845 feet). The seven-day National Day holiday in China is causing a tourism boom at Mount Hua.
