The G20 Hangzhou Summit which closed on September 5 is being praised by African journalists for having a heart for Africa and focusing attention on smaller economies.

In an exclusive interview with People’s Daily Online, Fredrick P.W. Gaye, news editor of the In Profile Daily Newspaper in Liberia, said that the G20 Hangzhou Summit is a history-making summit as it invited more developing countries and put more emphasis on Africa.

“African voices were heard and now more Africans know what the G20 is. I feel that China is trying to make G20 a household name across the world, rather than something for a few countries, because China has the vision,” Gaye said.

Ikenna Emewu, senior editor at The Sun Newspaper in Nigeria, commended the G20 in China for its emphasis on the need to integrate smaller economies to assist their growth.

China wants to use the platform to convince the bigger economies of G20 to place more emphasis on developing countries. China has in the past shown great commitment to smaller economies, the Nigerian senior editor noted.

“It’s possible that China can influence the G20 to think more like China. This is what we need. Let’s do more for the smaller economies of the world, not just Africa. I think China can shift more attention to the smaller economies including those in Asia. I believe China can do more for the smaller economies including my own country Africa,” Emewu noted.

China has taken the lead in helping the less-developed economies. It wants the developed world to support its vision, according to Gaye. “I believe the G20 summit will have its intended impact: help the developing world,” he noted.
