The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced on May 5 that the ship "Tan Suo Yi Hao," which was developed to support China's 4,500-meter manned submersible, has been delivered and will soon set sail to Sanya, a city in southern China's Hainan province, China News Agency reported on Thursday.
The new ship is capable of deep-sea expeditions and features more than 10 labs in its interior. Furthermore, two detachable mobile labs can be set up on the deck, which can accommodate 60 crew members and scientists.
"Tansuo Yi Hao" was originally a marine engineering ship. It was refitted to become a deep-sea research vessel starting in March of last year. The ship boasts a full load displacement of 6,250 tons, a total length of 94.45 meters, and an unlimited navigation area. Its endurance capacity is more than 10,000 nautical miles.
It is planned that the ship will soon sail to the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, according to a CAS researcher.
