SYDNEY, April 19 -- The behaviour of a University of Sydney tutor has been labelled as "completely out of line," following posts made about Chinese students online.
Wu Wei resigned from his position as the business school's head corporate finance tutor on Monday after posting a number of derogatory social media posts insulting students from China.
Students in Wu's class created a petition condemning the remarks, which were mostly made last year on Chinese social media outlet Weibo.
"The Usyd finance course is very difficult, not sure how many international pigs will hire essay writer [sic] because of their low IQ," read one of Wu's posts translated by a student who created the petition according to Fairfax.
Wu's Weibo account has since been taken down.
Workforce diversity specialist Conrad Liveris told Xinhua on Tuesday the comments have no place in a professional context or in an educational institution.
"They're not reflective of Australian values or attitudes toward multiculturalism," Liveris said.
Liveris recommended Wu undertake a training and reflective exercise to figure out why he was making such posts, as the comments were "completely out of line."
"Education is a big export for Australia and we really enjoy the experiences international students bring to the classroom."
Dean of the University of Sydney Business School Professor Gregory Whitwell added racist, sexist or offensive language was not tolerated.
"The expectations for our staff and affiliates in respect of their professional and personal conduct are clearly set out in the University's Code of Conduct," Whitwell said.
Wu was a Chinese national until April 2015 when he became an Australian citizen.
