A woman from China's eastern Zhejiang province recently sued a matchmaking agency for failing to help her find “Mr. Right” after she paid nearly 700,000 yuan in membership dues, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Friday.
The woman, surnamed Gao, is a divorced businesswoman running an e-commerce company. In order to find a romantic partner, she originally paid just over 100,000 yuan to a local matchmaking agency. That agency promised to introduce Gao to better potential partners than she was finding on her own.
However, Gao was still looking after going on dozens of dates. That’s when a matchmaker from the agency persuaded Gao to pay another 600,000 yuan for help in finding a billionaire partner.
But the agency failed again. Gao then asked the agency to return her money, but the agency refused, saying they would improve their service but the money could not be returned. Gao even hired a debt collection agency to get her money back.
The manager of the matchmaking agency stated that Gao was set up with 43 men in total, but failed to find a satisfactory match, so it wasn’t the fault of the agency that Gao wasn’t satisfied.
According to Ke Zhi, the director of a local law firm, the matchmaking agency must provide correspondent service to the sum of money that they charged. He says that Gao does have the right to apply for a refund if the services were not what was promised. He suggests that Gao should seek help from a consumer association or even take legal action.
