Backgrounder: Aircraft hijacking attempts and attacks in recent years

BEIJING, March 29 -- An Egyptair flight en route from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and diverted to Larnaca, Cyprus, on Tuesday. Following are some of the aircraft hijacking incidents since 2010.

Oct. 31, 2015 -- A Russian plane crashes into a mountainous area in the Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 passengers and crew members aboard. Moscow says the crash is a result of a bomb attack.

March 24, 2015 -- An Airbus A320 of Germanwings en route from Barcelona, Spain, to Duesseldorf, Germany, crashes in southern France, killing 150 people onboard. Investigations shows the co-pilot deliberately causes the crash.

Feb. 17, 2014 -- A co-pilot of Ethiopian Airlines flight hijacks his own plane with some 200 people onboard and diverted it to Geneva, Switzerland. The 31-year-old copilot says he wants to seek asylum in Switzerland.

Feb. 7, 2014 -- A Ukrainian passenger claims on a flight from Kharkiv, Ukraine, to Istanbul, Turkey, that there is a bomb onboard and tries to get into the cockpit, demanding the plane be diverted to the Russian city of Sochi. The plane lands in Istanbul and the hijacker is arrested.

April 24, 2011 -- A man on a flight from Paris to Rome tries to divert the flight to Tripoli, Libya, but he is neutralized by flight attendants and passengers. The hijacker is found to be an emotionally depressed Kazakh national.

Jan. 5, 2011 -- A passenger claims to be wearing a bomb and causes panic on a Turkish Airlines flight from Oslo, Norway, to Istanbul. The mentally ill passenger is taken down by two other passengers. The plane lands safely in Istanbul.
