(Xinhua)    10:15, February 25, 2016

INDIA-VRINDAVAN-CITY OF WIDOW

A widow stands against a wall in a government-operated widow shelter in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, India, Feb. 22, 2016. Vrindavan, where the deity Krishna spent his childhood according to Hinduism, is seen as a "city of widow" by local people. Women, especially those from West Bengal state, who lost their husband and were expelled by their family and children gather in this small town and devote their remaining years to Lord Krishna. The local government and charity organizations had made efforts to improve their lives in Vrindavan. However, most of the around 10,000 widows are still living far below average standard of common Indians, according to local charity organizations. (Xinhua/Bi Xiaoyang)
