A mobilization ceremony of construction of Karot Hydropower Plant was held 55km from Islamabad at the bank of Jhelum River on January 10, 2016, marking the beginning of the Karot Hydropower Plant’s structural construction.

The 1.65-billion-dollar Karot hydropower plant is the first investment project of the Silk Road Fund, an investment fund to finance China-proposed "Belt and Road" initiatives. The Karot hydropower project is being developed by the China Three Gorges Corporation. The project will provide 3.174 billion Kilowatt hour of clean energy and over 2000 jobs for Pakistan. The plant is expected to be put into operation in 2020 and to be transferred to Pakistan government after 30 years of operation.
