Unlike other seniors playing majhong to kill time after retirement, 65-year-old Zhejiang man, Jiang Tianxing, finished his undergraduate course with journalism major at Zhejiang University.
He is about to become the oldest self-taught postgraduate at Zhejiang University.
"Graduating from college has been one of my biggest wishes. If you want to learn, what’s the different between learning in your twenties or sixties?" Jiang Tianxing said just two days after he finished his thesis defense for his postgraduate degree in journalism in Zhejiang University on Oct 26.
"On that day, when Jiang entered the classroom, I thought he was a parent accompanying his child for thesis defense," said Professor Shen Aiguo, the head of the Media and International Culture Department.
Jiang Tianxing was born in Suxi Town, Yiwu, Zhejiang province in 1950. He joined the army and worked as a journalist in the troop. After retiring from the army, Jiang has been a movie projectionist for 36 years. After retirement, he has worked in an insurance company.
After graduating from middle school, Jiang Tianxing did not complete high school. He started to teach himself in 1985 and got recruited in a junior college, majoring in Chinese literature in Hangzhou. Then he picked up Russian, which he learned for three years at middle school. After three years of studying Russian by mail, he got a certification of completion for Russian language from Shanghai International Studies University.
