Expert: China’s naval overall strength exceeds Japan’s
An air-defense missile is launched from missile frigate "Changzhou" during a fire drill in the East China Sea, Aug. 27, 2015. The Chinese navy conducted a live fire drill in the East China Sea on Thursday. The exercise involved more than 100 warships, dozens of aircraft and several missile launch battalions, navy sources said. Nearly 100 missiles and several hundred shells and bombs were fired during the exercise. The majority of navy forces in the drill were from the Donghai Fleet. The overall strength of China’s navy has exceeded Japan’s, military expert Zhang Ming told Qianjiang Evening Daily.

“With increasing national power, Chinese military power has been growing,” said Zhang.

In terms of long-range air defense ships, Japan has six Aegis-class warships while China has 11 Aegis-class warships and four ships to be constructed. Japan has four intermediate-range air defense ships but China has eight intermediate-range air defense ships. Japan has 14 destroyers and China has 22 054/054A frigates. “The Chinese navy has more destroyers and frigates than Japanese self-defense force,” said Zhang.

Zhang believes that the biggest advantage of the Chinese navy lies in fixed-wing fighters. China has fighters including J-16, Su-30, H-6k, J-10 and J-16. Japanese self-defense force even has no planes.

“We have an aircraft carrier and nuclear-powered submarines, so the Chinese navy’s advantages against the Japanese navy is growing,” said Zhang.
