China-built nuclear power plant benefits Pakistan

According to the First Financial Daily, Pakistan is the No. 1 destination of China’s nuclear power export, and the Sino- Pakistan Economic Corridor is a flagship project of China's "Belt and Road" initiative.

According to Sino-Pakistan nuclear energy cooperation agreement, a 300,000 kilowatts pressurized-water reactor (PWR), the first phase of Pakistan's Chashma Nuclear Power Plant was put into commercial operation in September 2000. It has run in good condition since then.

"Signing and implementation of the project signifies that China's nuclear power technology has gone out of the country and had a presence in the international nuclear market," said Li Xiaoming, Assistant general manager of China National Nuclear Cooperation (CNNC).

The Chashma Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant China exported and a milestone in the history of China's nuclear power development. With the good operation record, it gained positive comments from the International Atomic Energy Agency and Pakistan’s government. China thus became the eighth nuclear power plant exporter in the world.

The Chashma Nuclear Power Plant has used local resources to maximize the participation of the Palestinian side. More than 60 percent of workers were Pakistani during the construction period.

"In the process of the construction, Pakistani culture and Chinese culture have been fully exchanged and integrated. If you go to our project site, you'll find a lot of Pakistani employees speaking the dialect of China's Sichuan province. As most Chinese employees are from Sichuan Province, the dialect also becomes a communication language after long term cooperation," Li Xiaoming said.

Since 1991, China has exported six nuclear power units to Pakistan. The majority of the equipment and materials in Chashma Nuclear Power Plant were made in China.
