China's top legislator meets Venezuelan president

BEIJING, Sept. 2-- Top Chinese legislator Zhang Dejiang on Wednesday met Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is in Beijing to attend the upcoming commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), welcomed Maduro, saying the Chinese people will work with the international community to jointly safeguard the outcome of WWII as well as international fairness and justice.

He said the consensus reached on Tuesday by President Xi Jinping and Maduro on future development of China-Venezuela ties will guide cooperation between the two countries.

The NPC is ready to hold more exchanges with the Congress of Venezuela, Zhang said, calling on both sides to deepen their friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Maduro said remembering history is important to promoting world peace and justice, and that Venezuela is ready to cooperate more with China.
