The number of college students living with AIDs in China has increased rapidly with male same sex as the main transmission sources, the National Health and Family Planning announced on Monday.
The commission issued the announcement to call on all colleges and schools in the country to establish an AIDS report system while protecting students’ privacy and providing free testing and counselling.
The announcement came almost one month after the health commission and China’s Ministry of Education jointly released a similar policy circular on July 15, in which they called for the establishment of an AIDs case reporting system to control and to prevent the spread of the deadly diseases.
Also in July , the State Council endorsed the establishment of the nation's first ever anti-AIDS foundation and the central government has invested 50 million yuan ($8.3 Million) initially. The money will go exclusively to non-governmental organizations supporting their efforts combating the epidemic.
According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission's report, China has about 800,000 people living with HIV/AIDS and diagnosed patients.
But actual number can be much higher as most AIDS patients or HIV carriers choose to keep it as a secret.
