BEIJING, July 28 -- The Chinese soldiers who fought in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 will be remembered by history for their contribution to safeguarding peace, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang's comment came one day after the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, which falls on Monday.

"The Chinese People's Volunteer Army (CPVA) will be remembered by history for their contribution to safeguarding peace and the friendship between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)," Lu said.

The CPVA fought side by side with the DPRK army in the Korean War against the South Korean army and U.S.-led UN forces. Tens of thousands of CPVA soldiers died on the Korean Peninsula during the war, which ended in an armistice in 1953.

At the fourth National Conference of War Veterans on Saturday, the DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un paid tribute to the CPVA for its role in his country's liberation, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

Kim sent a wreath Monday to the fallen Chinese fighters' cemetery in Hoechang County, South Pyongan Province, where the soldiers, including Mao Anying, son of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong, were buried.
